Although illustration is ubiquitous globally, its history and analysis have lagged behind
studies in media-specific disciplines in design, fine art, and craft. This book brings
together multiple points of view to provide a sampling of illustration worldwide within
a discussion of core issues and concepts in visual communication and visual culture
relevant to illustration studies. It positions the act of illustrating at the center of visual
meaning-making and highlights the cultural role and impact of illustrators.
