The UK-Indonesia's Digital Multi-Track Diplomacy in 2014-2019
This thesis examines the implementation of digital multi-track diplomacy between the United Kingdom and Indonesia during the tenure of Moazzam Malik as the British Ambassador from 2014 to 2019. Employing a mixed-methods research approach, the analysis draws on data collected through Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques, encompassing news media, gray literature, and social media. The findings reveal that the UK, under Malik’s leadership, effectively leveraged digital channels to promote soft power, particularly in the realms of education and cultural exchange. The study highlights the prominence of government-to-government interactions (Track 1), educational initiatives (Track 5), and religious diplomacy (Track 7), which were strategically used to foster stronger ties between the UK and Indonesia. In contrast, tracks such as conflict resolution (Track 2) were less emphasized, reflecting the stable and cooperative nature of the bilateral relationship. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on digital diplomacy by offering insights into the strategic use of digital platforms in contemporary international relations. It underscores the evolving nature of diplomacy in the digital age, where cultural and economic considerations are increasingly recognized as vital components of international relations. The study also explores the broader implications of digital diplomacy in shaping future diplomatic strategies, emphasizing the integration of social and economic diplomacy to strengthen international partnerships.
