Challenges of Jugun Ianfu Conflict Reconciliation between South Korea and Japan from 2015 - 2023

This research looks at South Korea and Japan's unsuccessful efforts to reconcile their differences between 2015 to 2023. This research will examine the developments between the two nations since former comfort women in South Korea first began to speak out in the early 1990s. We will use English translations of materials from Korean and Japanese sources, including scholarly articles, victim testimonies, and government documents. This study explores key turning points in the evolution of the complex political landscape surrounding the issue. These include the challenging normalization of relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea in 1965, the bravery of those who introduced the first "Me-too" movement in South Korea, and various disputes that have strained diplomatic relations and angered the populations in both countries. In summary, this study contends that the Japanese government's callous, flimsy apologies, which come across to South Korea as "sorry, but not sorry," as well as its indifferent attitude toward the victims are the biggest obstacles to peace.
