Powers Among Nations: The Dynamics of Power Complexity in the Digital Age Towards Balancing of Power
Trying to understand state behavior in a sphere called the balance of power requires a deep understanding. It is difficult, but that does not mean it cannot be explored. This thesis starts from the premise presented by Nye, that success also depends on 'whose story wins,' not just'whose army wins.' From many dimensions of power, this thesis attempts to examine three dimensions of power, which are: hard power, soft power, and cyber power. In the study of international relations, the hard power dimension has long been a topic of discussion in the context of the balance of power, and many famous names have discussed this dimension. Then, two decades towards the end of the 20th century, a new concept was introduced by Nye which he called soft power. Furthermore, in the contemporary era when technological advances are increasingly blurring the boundaries of sovereignty between countries, a new dimension has emerged called cyber power. From these three dimensions, it is then derived into 14 variables, measured based on 60 indicators, in 25 sectors of government and critical infrastructure, and 193 countries have become research samples; then the research results are narrated based on the classification of countries with high, middle, and low power levels. This thesis uses qualitative and quantitative methods to answer the complexity of each dimension in affecting other dimensions. This thesis found that the cyber power dimension significantly affects and is able to enhance the other dimensions; this can be interpreted that each country should not neglect its technological capabilities and needs to strengthen its own cyberspace. Furthermore, interesting findings from this research reveal that countries which are divided into three power groups have their own characteristics to achieve a balance of power. In high-power countries, the technology, energy, military, and economic sectors, if optimized, will significantly increase the country's power. Furthermore, in middle-power countries, attributes in the soft power dimension such as other countries' perceptions of the country's government, activeness, and involvement in the international stage will attract the attention of other countries to cooperate with the aim of developing the economy, so as to increase the country's power. Finally, in low-power countries, it is necessary to improve the impression of the government, financial sector, and manufacturing so that the trust of other countries can increase. This thesis further amplifies Nye's argument that anyone must be smart in combining the dimensions of power to obtain the desired outcomes.
