Sports Diplomacy on Reconciliation of Inter-Korea Relations and Progress of Reunification during President Moon Jae-in’s Administration

This article discusses the use of sports diplomacy in the inter-Korean reunification process focused on the administration of President Moon Jae-in. Korean reunification is one of the points highlighted by President Moon Jae-in during the South Korean presidential election campaign. The momentum of hosting the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics in February was the beginning of efforts to improve inter-Korean relations, then resulting in the Panmunjom Declaration on Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula in April 2018. Sports diplomacy continued at the sport multi-event, 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games in August with the expansion of the sports event of the joint team contingent sent, not only to promote peace between North Korea and South Korea through the One Korea to the Global community but also a form of effort to normalize relations between the Koreas. Inter-Korean relations that began with sports diplomacy expanded in other sectors as the development of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), cooperation in forestry, health, and humanitarian aid. Reviewing the intensity of relations between North and South Korea through sports diplomacy, both parties agreed on a plan to send a joint team contingent at multi-event sports events, especially the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics to continue the reunification efforts of North and South Korea.
